In China’s Tibet Autonomous Region’s Ngari Prefecture is the mountain known as Mount Kailash. Its elevation is 6,638 metres (21,778 ft). It is located in the western region of the Tibetan Plateau, in the Kailash Range (Gangdisê Mountains) in the Transhimalaya. The distance between Mount Kailash and the western intersection of the borders of China, India, and Nepal is less than 100 kilometres.
In close proximity to Lake Manasarovar and Lake Rakshastal is Mount Kailash. Nearby to this mountain and the two lakes are the origins of four significant Asian rivers. The Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali are these rivers (a tributary of the Ganges, fed by Mabja Zangbo). Four different religions—Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and Bon—view Mount Kailash as sacred.
