Bhutan now offers duty-free gold purchases to visitors. According to national media Kuensel, visitors to Bhutan who pay the “Sustainable Development Fee” (SDF) can purchase gold duty-free in Phuentsholing and Thimphu. To celebrate the birth anniversary of Bhutan’s King and Losar, the country’s New Year, the Department of Tourism (DoT) and Bhutan Duty-Free (BDF) made the choice.
Indians are likely to benefit the most from the new program because they make up the majority of visitors to Bhutan. All tourists who pay the SDF will be allowed to buy gold duty-free as long as they stay at least one night in a hotel that has been approved by the Department of Tourism, according to Kuensel.
“If they stay at a hotel that has been approved by the Department of Tourism for at least one night, all SDF-paying visitors will be qualified to buy gold duty-free. Beginning March 1, buyers can purchase the gold in Phuentsholing and Thimphu “That was ad.
The article further stated that duty-free shops run by the Bhutanese finance ministry will sell the gold. Bhutan’s duty-free shops are tax-free but “will not make any profit as the purpose is to promote tourism,” in addition to not being taxed.
