Bhutan now offers duty-free gold purchases to visitors. According to national media Kuensel, visitors to Bhutan who pay the “Sustainable Development Fee” (SDF) can purchase gold duty-free in Phuentsholing and Thimphu. To celebrate the birth anniversary of Bhutan’s King and Losar, the country’s New Year, the Department of Tourism (DoT) and Bhutan Duty-Free (BDF) made the choice.

Indians are likely to benefit the most from the new program  because they make up the majority of visitors to Bhutan. All tourists who pay the SDF will be allowed to buy gold duty-free as long as they stay at least one night in a hotel that has been approved by the Department of Tourism, according to Kuensel.
